Rolex Explorer 124270

The Explorer in 36 mm, back at the size of the original, with the 3-6-9 dial and calibre 3230.

The 124270 is the 36 mm Explorer, introduced in 2021. With it Rolex returned to the size of the original Explorer of 1953, after the 39 mm 214270 that was made from 2010 to 2021. The dial remains instantly recognisable: black, with the numerals 3, 6 and 9 and the Mercedes hour hand, with luminous material that glows blue in the dark.

Calibre 3230 has the Chronergy escapement and about 70 hours of power reserve; case and Oyster bracelet are in Oystersteel, and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. At the same time Rolex introduced a version in Oystersteel and yellow gold, the 124273, but the steel 124270 is the version closest to the original.

The Explorer is not a dive watch but a robust watch for everyday use, with a smooth bezel and a simple, legible dial. On a pre-owned example we look at the smooth case and bezel, on which scratches show quickly, at the bracelet and clasp, and at the set. Anyone looking for a larger size chooses the 39 mm 214270; anyone looking for a dive watch, the Submariner.

Questions about the 124270

Why is the Explorer 36 mm again?

In 2021 Rolex returned the Explorer to the size of the 1953 original. Anyone looking for a larger Explorer chooses the 39 mm 214270, made until 2021.

Is the Explorer a dive watch?

No. The Explorer is a robust watch for everyday wear and travel, water-resistant to 100 metres but without a rotating diving bezel; for that there is the Submariner.

Can I sell or trade in my 124270 with you?

Yes. You can offer a 124270 as an outright sale, on consignment or as a trade-in against another watch. Every request is assessed by hand; a proposal only follows afterwards and is never guaranteed in advance. Read more in our guide to selling.

What if no 124270 is available?

Then we search for one. Use watch sourcing to tell us which version, condition and set you are looking for. We will contact you as soon as we find a suitable example; whether and when that happens cannot be guaranteed in advance.
