The 124270 is the 36 mm Explorer, introduced in 2021. With it Rolex returned to the size of the original Explorer of 1953, after the 39 mm 214270 that was made from 2010 to 2021. The dial remains instantly recognisable: black, with the numerals 3, 6 and 9 and the Mercedes hour hand, with luminous material that glows blue in the dark.
Calibre 3230 has the Chronergy escapement and about 70 hours of power reserve; case and Oyster bracelet are in Oystersteel, and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. At the same time Rolex introduced a version in Oystersteel and yellow gold, the 124273, but the steel 124270 is the version closest to the original.
The Explorer is not a dive watch but a robust watch for everyday use, with a smooth bezel and a simple, legible dial. On a pre-owned example we look at the smooth case and bezel, on which scratches show quickly, at the bracelet and clasp, and at the set. Anyone looking for a larger size chooses the 39 mm 214270; anyone looking for a dive watch, the Submariner.
