About Panerai
From Florence to the Italian Navy
Panerai began in 1860 as Giovanni Panerai's watch shop and workshop in Florence. The company became a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy and in the 1930s developed a watch for its combat divers: the Radiomir, named after the radium-based luminous material on the dial. Around 1950 the Luminor followed, with a new luminous substance and later the characteristic bridge that protects and seals the crown. For a long time these watches were for military use only. The first models for the public appeared in 1993, the Richemont group took over the brand in 1997, and since 2005 Panerai has also made its own calibres in Neuchâtel.
What we check on a Panerai
On a Panerai the inspection starts with the PAM number, the model reference, and the serial number on the case, which together with the series letter indicates the production year. We assess the dial, on many models a sandwich dial in which the luminous material sits beneath a cut-out upper plate, the hands, the crown and, on a Luminor, the crown guard with its lever, the case and caseback, and the movement. Because a Panerai is often worn on other straps, we state whether the original strap and original buckle are present, and which additional straps come with it. Whatever we find is stated in the description.
Models we offer and look for
Most enquiries concern the Luminor Marina, the classic Luminor with small seconds, in the 44 and 42 mm sizes, and the Luminor Due, a thinner version of the same shape. We also look for the Luminor GMT, the Radiomir with its cushion case and wire lugs, and the Submersible as a dive watch with a rotating bezel. Hand-wound models with a simple dial remain sought after by admirers of the original design. A Panerai is not always online; if you are looking for a particular PAM number, you can give us a sourcing request.
Buying, selling and trading in
You buy a Panerai from us through a request without obligation. We confirm availability personally; you pay by bank transfer once you agree and receive the watch insured, or collect it by appointment. You can sell outright, on consignment or as a trade-in against another watch. Please state the PAM number, the series letter and which straps, buckle, tools and documents you have; with Panerai the set often includes more than with other brands. Every request is assessed by hand, and a proposal only follows afterwards. The Aequator Collection is an independent dealer and not an authorised Panerai retailer.
